€179.95
Maria Van Oosterwijck was born in Nootdorp, near Delft, as the third child of minister Jacobus van Oosterwijck and his wife Adriana Lambrechts van Linschoten. One child died at a young age, after which she grew up with her older sister Geertruyt and younger brother Lambertus. After her mother died in 1636, the Van Oosterwijck family moved to Voorburg, where father Jacobus worked. He remarried in 1643 to Maria Jansdochter Cloetingh, from a well-known Delft book printer family.
Training and breakthrough
An aunt of Maria on her mother’s side was married in 1637 to Hendrik van Beijeren, father of the still-life painter Abraham van Beijeren. Partly through contact with Abraham and his wife Anna van den Queborn, who was also an artist, Maria developed her talent for drawing. From about 1656 she probably lived and worked in a studio on Voorstraat in Delft, together with the aforementioned cousins. The house was originally owned by her grandfather, but was inherited by her father. In 1658 she moved with Lambertus, who was going to study theology, to Leiden, also because many family members lived there. From May 1660 Maria lived in Utrecht, as a student in the studio of still life painter Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who strongly influenced her.
